About Barahona
Artisans and Arts & Crafts There is a wealth of all kinds of artistic expression in the southwest. The city of Barahona has produced distinguished personalities of international talent and fame in cinema, literature, theatre and comedy.
María Montez, a young Barahonian woman who dreamed of becoming an actress in Hollywood, saw her dreams come true when she became the most famous actress in Universal Studios at the beginning of the 1940s, and later on, became famous in Europe especially in French and Italian movies. She starred in immortal Technicolor movies like:"Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and in"The Arabian Nights" capturing the heart of Hollywood with her charm and incomparable beauty. The International Airport in Barahona is called after her name.
Another eminent representative of Barahona was the"Sovereign", Casandra Damiron, the first successful artist of merengue and traditional Dominican music in Europe, the United States and Latin America. She spent her last years promoting folk music and teaching folk dances. The Journalists of the Arts Awards, in annual recognition of artistic talent, was started in her honor in 1984. Today, these awards include participation of international artists who are awarded"The Casandra" statue for their efforts in the dissemination of Dominican culture abroad.
