Tourism in Barahona
Paraiso (Paradise) The name of this little village located in Barahona is more than justified because of its coastal and mountainous scenery that turn it into"a beautiful piece of sky that has been given to us as a gift by the land". Between rivers, wet forests and clouds, beaches and people of"good stock" , this all combined with several families of Italian and Haitian heritage, the human warmth so typical in Dominican people; making it a rich cultural mix.
One of the most impressive phenomena that captivate visitors takes places in the month of May, when there is an unfolding of dozens of butterflies, producing a rain of colors on the plains, turning this southern town into a real paradise.
Paraiso is overflowing with beauty. The lookout at Calimetes, at the entrance, you can get a view of the village in all its glory, as well as the shades of green on the mountains which change to a vibrant blue on the crystalline coastline, where the off-white underground waters from the Nizaito river join in the reflection of the sky on the sea.
The spas or bathing spots on the rivers Nizaito and Sito in the nearby areas around Paraiso, besides their natural attributes, are somewhat mystical, typical to other areas of Barahona, with the change in color tone of their waters in the different seasons.
At the market on the main street there are crafts and other articles for sale to visitors, eager to acquire a little piece of this charming village. On Sundays, there are cockfights, part of the Dominican folklore tradition, and this is of interest to tourist and residents alike amidst all the music and noisy gaiety.

I was born in Barahona in 1960 and visited this beautiful town in 2000. It's the most beautiful place I ever seen. I am interested in any membership that I can join to encourage tourism in this region. I currently reside in the USA but planning to retire soon in the province of Enriquillo
