Beaches and spas
The Southwest boasts a coastline bordered by sandy beaches with heterogeneous features in the different coastal spots and places that appeal to all tastes. “San Rafael” attracts groups of swimmers in the party spirit, with music, dances and Creole food; “"Bahia de las Aguilas" or "Bay of Eagles” is a wonder depicted by its immense virginal beauty; while the beach at Pedernales offers the calmness of a fishing coast that only awakes in the twilight of the day with the return of the fishermen.
When travelling down the Barahona coastline, still mostly pure and untouched, you would be advised to take preventive measures like hiring a certified guide or tour-operator recommended by the hotel staff to guide you to out-of-the way places, undiscovered as yet by tourists.
Next to a fishing community called Pedernales is a beach that is very quiet during the day but comes to life when the fishing boats come in from dusk until nightfall.
The main tourist attraction in the community of Neyba, in Bahoruco; this is a deep, crystal clear, natural mineral water lake with a gravel bottom. The spa is equipped to receive visitors with chairs, umbrella, restrooms and changing rooms. The guarded car park and food stalls make it perfect for a cold dip in the lake waters suitable for experienced swimmers.
This is on the panoramic highway from Duvergé to Pedernales. The Mulito river is one of the main tributaries that are part of the Pedernales river, one of the three most important rivers in the Southwest region. On the edge of the Mulito there is a rushing waterfall of dense vegetation that dyes its waters green.
Place of merry meetings and celebrations, is located right on the Barahona Seafront Road. This is a beach with toilet and beach-chair facilities, guarded car-parks and road access. It also has various food stalls with typical food to savor Barahona in all senses of the word, and has a view of the coastline with the sharp contrast of mountainous scenery of the Bahoruco valley.
The town of the La Ciénaga has a beautiful gravelly beach protected by small reefs and is ideal for all types of swimmers. Although it lacks tourist infrastructure and sanitary facilities, it offers a delightful, showy coastal landscape.
